First retail space at Resorts World Sentosa to open on Jan 20 PDF Print E-mail
Written by SingaCasino
Monday, 18 January 2010 11:40

Visitors to Resorts World Sentosa will be able to shop there when the first of its retail belt opens in time, for its soft launch on Wednesday.

The shopping strip makes up about 20 per cent of the entire retail space at the integrated resort.

As for its casino and the Universal Studio theme park, the company is hoping to open both in time for the Lunar New Year.

Last minute touches are being made to greet guests when Singapore's first integrated resort opens. With just four of its six hotels and 10 restaurants opened, there is already strong interest from both locals and tourists.

Andrew Hickey, vice president (Rooms), Resorts World Sentosa said: "We had over 5,000 room nights booked in the first days of our reservations centre opening. (There is a) strong local demand from the overseas travel trade.
"Chinese New Year is already booked out. Indicators are very very strong. Weekends are filling up obviously".

Resorts World has said it is targeting 12 to 13 million visitors each year, boosting Singapore's visitor arrival numbers.
The Singapore Tourism Board has said that it hopes the two Integrated Resorts, including the one at Marina Bay Sands, will help double visitorship figures to 17 million by 2015.

Also making its grand opening on Wednesday is the Galleria - where retail staff have been put through the paces. This retail belt links the Festive Hotel, the casino entrance and Hotel Michael.

Noel Hawkes, vice president, Resort Operations, Resorts World Sentosa said: "We also have a Swarovski, we have a beauty hall and we have a Swiss shop gallery. We have some very nice new to market brands like Canali, which will open its first retail shop in Singapore as well as a very famous brand from Canada called Damiani, which is a very high-end jewellery shop."

"Apart from these high-end jewellery (shops), we also have our very famous Chihuly gallery. This is going to be very exciting. We have about S$6 million worth of his very beautiful art works and his chandeliers in the casino as well as the Crockfords Tower, and now guests will be able to go and buy smaller pieces which are absolutely fabulous or some of his wonderful paintings.

"We have also got a Michael Graves gallery - first in the world in fact - and Michael Graves is the one who designed this entire project. He will have his own gallery selling stuff that he designed himself like the whistling teapot."

The completed retail stretch at Resorts World Sentosa is about 300 metres long, with over 20 high-end brands including the highly anticipated Victoria's Secret boutique.

Mr Hawkes said: "A lot of the retail here is geared towards our casino customers, (and) impulse buying.
"So that is why we have targeted some of the products. There are very high-end retail, expensive watches, diamonds, jewellery."
About 70 per cent of the resort's entire retail space is expected to be ready by next month.

"Especially if you take into consideration our Universal Studios, which is huge. We have got about 16 shops over there and we have something for absolutely everybody within our retail offerings in Universal Studios," added Mr Hawkes.

But the clincher for most people would be the opening of the theme park and casino.

Ron Lim, general manager, Crossroad Tours & Travel said: "I already got a group of 12 persons coming from Taiwan into Resorts World. From what we see, it is supposed to be good.

"Furthermore, Casino is tied up with a theme park so when the adults play at the casino they will still go to the theme park".
Wendy Leong, general manager, City Tours said: "The main concern right now is when Universal Studio is going to be opened, so that we will be able to package it together including all the hotel stay as well."

Resorts World is currently awaiting licensing approvals from authorities for both the casino and theme park. And when Universal Studios opens, 20 out of its 24 rides will be fully operational.

Over the next two years, visitors can expect phase two of Resorts World Sentosa to be completed. These include two more hotels and the marine life park, the world's largest oceanarium.

RWS absorbs Sentosa island admission charges PDF Print E-mail

PRESS RELEASE From Resorts World Sentosa:
Singapore, 18 January 2010 – Visitors to Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), Singapore’s first Integrated Resort (IR), will get to enjoy the resort without having to pay for Sentosa island admission charges.
Mr. Michael Chin, Executive Vice-President for Projects at RWS said: “We are Singapore’s IR, and we believe we should be a destination that Singaporeans can enjoy at all times. This is a resort that Singaporeans can call their own, so we have put in a lot of effort to ensure that the resort is accessible to all. Not only will there be dedicated bus services into the resort, we will also absorb the island admission charges for all our visitors.”
The waiver for visitors takes effect from 20 January when RWS opens its four hotels to the public, and visitors would have to pay only for their transport fares or parking charges.
More transport options into RWS
For as little as S$1.80 a bus trip, visitors can go right into Singapore’s first IR to enjoy its four hotels, entertainment and sample a range of F&B offerings.
To facilitate accessibility for visitors, RWS has embarked on a public bus programme with SMRT to provide a dedicated shuttle bus service RWS 8, which will pick up visitors from VivoCity and HarbourFront and take them right into the resort. Two other bus services, RWS 68 and RWS 88 will bring visitors from Outram MRT station and City Hall MRT station respectively into the resort. This will be the first public bus service into Sentosa island.
Visitors entering the resort by taxis will alight at a central drop-off point in the 3,500-lot basement car park.
For motorists, they will turn off along Sentosa Gateway and drive straight into the resort’s car park. They need to pay only the car park charges, and enjoy the convenience of not having to pass through the island admission gantries.
station which is located at the heart of RWS. The S$3 charge per person will apply and visitors can use their EZ-Link cards to board the trains.
Concession parking rates during weekday lunch hours
Drivers are charged by the hour for parking within the resort, and this fee is capped at a maximum of S$20 for 24 hours. During weekday-lunch hours from between 12.00pm and 2.00pm, RWS is introducing a special concession rate of S$1 for the first hour of parking.
For example, motorists who park from 10am to 6pm on a weekday will incur S$20 in parking charges, which works out to an average of S$2.50 per hour. Motorists who park beyond 8 hours will still incur S$20 and the average charge per hour will be further reduced.
RWS’ Vice-President for Resort Operations, Mr Noel Hawkes said: “Resorts World Sentosa welcomes all visitors and we believe the experience starts from the moment one is on the road. We have been working closely with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to improve the traffic conditions around the HarbourFront precinct, and we thank the LTA, Sentosa Development Corporation and other precinct partners for their support and cooperation.
“In line with our green efforts and to ease the traffic conditions in the area, we would like to encourage visitors to take public transport to the resort. As improvements are still underway, we seek your understanding and welcome any feedback to help us improve."
Resorts World Sentosa opens its four hotels and 10 dining outlets to the public on 20 January. The opening dates for Universal Studios Singapore and the casino will be announced later.
RWS spent more than S$80 million to build a new vehicular bridge which doubled the road capacity to and from the island. The new bridge opened in September 2009, and can cater to about 6000 vehicles per hour.

Casino competition hots up, can S'pore IRs take the heat? PDF Print E-mail

With roulette wheels spinning and jackpot machines already whirring in casinos throughout a dozen Asian countries, the inevitable question that springs to mind is: Will there be enough well-heeled customers to feed the industry as more Las Vegasstyle super casinos go up in new locations?

The question arises with the distinct possibility of luxury casino complexes coming up in Tokyo and the southern island region of Okinawa by 2012, as Japan moves closer to an overhaul of its strict gambling laws.

Taiwan is also considering lifting its ban on casinos, while Thailand is also seen as likely to relax its gaming laws in the coming years, an AFP report said on Sunday.

The number of countries already cashing in on the gaming industry is somewhat startling: There are the huge ones in Macau and Australia, and lots of smaller ones in countries from Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Cambodia and Laos to Myanmar.

Closer to home, there’s Genting in Malaysia and sister company’s Star Cruises vessels with casinos on board which ply to Singapore. Goa, too, has a number of gambling ships.

The target of Japan’s casinos, as in the case of Singapore’s two integrated resorts (IR) at Marina Bay and on Sentosa, are rich Asian tourists, whose gaming instincts will help boost the economy of the casino-operating countries. So, will Singapore experience a dilution of its IR business once these newcomers are up and running?

Vegas Sands wins Singapore casino PDF Print E-mail

Singapore has selected gaming firm Las Vegas Sands to build and operate the nation's first casino.

Sands was one of four companies that submitted bids and the other firms included the more-favoured Harrah's Entertainment and MGM Mirage.

The casino project is set to cost more than $3bn (£1.6bn) and Singapore says it wants the waterfront site to become an emblem for the city-state.

Singapore aims to attract Asian gamblers and boost tourism revenues.

Regional expansion

Most of the region's gambling industry is currently centred on Macau, the Chinese special administrative region and former Portuguese colony, down the coast from Hong Kong.
