IRs in S'pore set to spur the gaming machines industry
SINGAPORE: The opening of the two integrated resorts (IRs) in Singapore is likely to be a windfall for makers of casino-related products, including gaming machines, tables and surveillance systems.
Industry players estimated that annual sales could hit US$400 million across Asia. They said that operating out of Singapore may be a smart bet for slot machines suppliers.
Singapore company Weike Gaming Technology appears to have hit the jackpot. The 12-year-old firm is one of many manufacturers that supplies slot machines to the two IRs in Singapore.
This year, Weike is targeting a 10 to 20 per cent growth in business. Currently, Weike exports about 90 per cent of its products.

Singapore's first casino resort to open January 20
SINGAPORE (AFP) - – Singapore's Resorts World Sentosa said Tuesday it will open phase one of the city-state's first casino complex on January 20, beginning operations at four luxury hotels.
Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Crockfords Tower and Hotel Michael will open their doors on January 20, offering 1,350 rooms and 10 restaurants, it said in a statement.
Resorts World Sentosa said it is working with authorities to obtain approvals for its Universal Studios Singapore theme park and will announce the opening date for the casino when its receives notice of its licence.
The casino and theme park are expected to open in "early 2010," it said.
A marine life park, expected to be the biggest in the world, a maritime museum, a spa and two more hotels will be launched after 2010.
The development, located on Singapore's Sentosa island, is built by Malaysian gaming giant Genting Group at a cost of 4.4 billion US dollars.

HOT HOT HOT!!!
RESORTS World at Sentosa's (RWS) recruitment drive began almost three years ago, and despite receiving thousands of applications and taking part in 100 job fairs, it has filled only 10 per cent of its workforce.
With only months to go before its opening, the integrated resort needs to have 7,000 more staff by October and a total of 10,000 by the time it fully opens early next year.
To ramp up these numbers, RWS is holding another job fair this weekend to fill about 5,000 rank and file positions such as chambermaids, tram drivers and bellhops. It is the biggest recruitment exercise held so far for such positions.
The resort began hiring immediately after it won the tender in December 2006, in what it calls a 'planned process', said assistant director of communications Robin Goh.

KEEN to be a dancer, musician or actor?
Such career options in the arts and entertainment industries look good for graduates of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa), with the completion of the two integrated resorts (IRs) in Marina Bay and Sentosa by 2011.
This was noted on Saturday by Dr Ng Eng Hen who mentioned, for example, the need of Universal Studios - a draw in the Sentosa IR - for people for its show productions.
Wanted too are talent to manage shows and events, and provide technical support.

SIGNS of a global economic recovery, coupled with rate cuts at hotels and cheaper fares, seem to have slowed the steep decline in the number of tourists coming to Singapore.
July's visitor arrivals, though 4.5 per cent fewer than in the same period last year, was the smallest decline seen so far this year. In previous months until now, the industry has seen tourist arrivals shrink between 6.1 and 15.2 per cent.
'Cautious optimism' that things may be on the brink of a turnaround is starting to replace the sinking feeling travel agents and hoteliers have had since tourism went south a year ago.
